Shot Count Task

Shot count task

The number of shots/cuts that are used in my chosen video which is  keane sovereign light café

I choose this song and this music video because the idea of it is quite unusual and the format is different and actually fresh. It features the lead singer walking down a  beach front with a load of different people that are cut in walking with him too including a band and dancers.

After a close count I found that the number of shots in the music video is 83 including the fade opening and the fade closing shots.

The main shot types in the video where just straight snap/cut shots
The editing techniques used where the fade in and out shots at the start and end of the video and the slowed speed of the house that you see run across the screen in the first couple of seconds and then again in the middle of the song. There is a lot of pull focus shots for example the shot of the girls legs that are in focus and the houses in the background that appear out of focus and the same with the wrestlers where one appears in and the other out. In all the moments of action eg. When the people are jumping backwards off the railings there is a slight slower speed and when it gets back on to the main singer the speed increases.
There is a lot of different camera focuses and angles to show the content of the shot and what the director wants you to look at in every shot so some times it is an establishing shot of the beach and other shots are of peoples faces in a mid shot and then other times it is a close up shot of someone’s feet or hands.
But as the lyrics suggest the song is taking us on a journey down to this café and there is very much a link to this in the video the song even talks about a bandstand and a pier so there is a certain link to the beach.

The genre is applied in the video because of they way in, which the song is portrayed, and they way in, which it shows what the lyrics are saying. The video is quite carm and laid back and I believe that is what the song sounds like. And the song fits in that alternative rock and rock pop genre, which is what keane normally, do.

The narrative is actually a reality as it talks about this café that exists in a place called Bexhill-on-Sea and many of the real road names are used, so it is really possible that the song has been written on someone’s account of a real life experience of this place and it is said that this place is close to where the members of keane grow up so for this song the narrative could not get more personal and more real. The audience can be applied to this very easily because as this is a real place that people could have visited it could have a connection with many people also they was people involved in the video of different backgrounds and ways of life so people could have a connection thought the song by that. As I have mentioned there is a direct representation to members of the band as they grow up near there and also there is a representation with Britain with the British flag that is flying at the end of the video.
